Due to popular demand and many requests from across the nation to extend the last date of TGMC 2010 project submission, we are now extending the last date to 8th April, 2011. We will continue to accept the projects till then.

Please send completed projects, along with team name/college name/state name/project scenario written on the CD/ DVD, as well as on the envelope. Also add contact details on the envelope. Projects not sent in the format described here will not be accepted.

Properly pack the CD/DVD to avoid any damage and send it to the following address:

2nd Sessional Tests

As already notified, the second sessional tests will be held from 28.03.2011 to 01.04.2011. Some students of some of the classes have been allowed to go on tour during this period. A special software, managed by a common server, would keep a tab on the authenticity of the question papers and fairness in the conduct of examination


Embracing the advances made in information technology to facilitate better learning environment, Punjab Technical University (PTU) is planning to conduct its examinations online from the forthcoming academic session.

"There are around four lakh students, who are studying at various colleges that are affiliated to PTU and conducting examination for them needed a lot of manpower, time and resources," said PTU Registrar, Nachhatar Singh.

"Therefore, in a bid to streamline our examination system, we have decided to conduct exams online from the next session. Moreover, online examination would enable the university to announce the results without any delay," said Singh.

He added they had developed a special software that would be managed by a common server to keep a tab on the authenticity of the question papers and fairness in the conduct of examination.

"We have also planned to impart training to our staff members to manage the operations of online examinations. We would offer students an option to make a choice between online or paper-pen examination," he said.

Singh said that the target of the PTU was to impart quality education not the quantity of students. He also said that they had written to the All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to not allow opening of the new technical colleges as during the recent past, 45 percent seats in engineering courses, 25 percent in management institutes and 75 percent in pharmacy colleges remained vacant.

He added that changes should be made in the present syllabus so as to meet the changing requirements of the industrial world. The university is working with CII to develop the syllabus of the courses. Singh said that most of the study centres are unable to facilitate the students by providing them good academic environment. The university is considering a proposal under which the study centres will conduct classes on specific days and organise personal contact programmes. <

NOTICE
The list of students having dues standing against them is being sent to all the Directors / Principals of CGC. As already notified, no student is to be allowed to attend classes till he / she clears these dues completely. If at all some student has already deposited these dues in some bank directly, he /she should bring the receipt of the same to Accounts Department of CGC and get the relevant entries made immediately.
It may further be noted that the last date for depositing fee for next semester without any late fee fine is 19.05.2011. PTU exams for the current semester are going to start from 20.05.2011. Admit card for these exams will be issued only after the fees for next semester are deposited. The students who want to discontinue availing hostels / bus facility with effect from next semester should submit on application for the same before 19.05.2011 so that their dues for next semester are charged accordingly.

With a view to make budding professionals of Information Technology (IT) aware about latest developments in the field of IT, the Department of Information Technology of Delhi Technological University (DTU), formerly Delhi College of Engineering, has established a students' body - 'Society for IT Engineers' (SITE).

SITE was formerly inaugurated today by Mr. Savitur Prasad, IAS, Secretary, Department of IT, Govt. of Delhi along with Prof. S.C. Dutta Roy, IIT Delhi, Prof. P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, DTU, Prof. O.P. Verma, Head of IT Department, DTU and Dr. N.S. Raghava, Faculty Advisor, SITE among others. Welcoming the distinguished guests, Prof. Sharma said, "Technical societies in educational institutions play a crucial role in bridging the gap between what the course curriculum offers to the students and what the industry expects. I am hopeful that SITE would act as a connection between the world of academia and world of industry and aid us in transforming graduating engineers to professional engineers."

Stating that IT has made rapid strides in all areas of human activity, Prof Roy urged students to take IT to those sections of society that have not been benefited by IT. "Can you reverse 'Society for IT Engineers' to 'IT Engineers for Society' and do something for not just your own professional development but for the society at large," he asked the students.

Chief Guest at the occasion, Mr Prasad, complimented the University for establishing a Society for IT students. He even invited DTU students to work with them on live projects undertaken by the Department of IT, Govt. of Delhi. He said, "We are keen to provide efficient services and readdress grievances of residents of Delhi in a more effective way, by using IT, and I call upon the students to think about how we can achieve that. I would like DTU students to conceptualize and implement new projects in E-Governance and citizen services."

The inaugural function of SITE was followed by a technical session by Mr Tapan Paul, Regional Sales Head, Motorola India. SITE would be organizing several activities like workshops, seminars, projects etc. for students to nurture their technical skills and unleash their talent in areas like programming, designing, web development, image processing, robotics, hacking, animation and others.

Installing PostgreSQL
Make sure your package repositories and installed programs are up to date by issuing the following commands:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade --show-upgraded
Issue the following command to install PostgreSQL, required dependencies, and some packages that provide additional functionality:
apt-get install postgresql postgresql-contrib
The current version of the database server will be installed, along with several supporting packages.

Creating a Database
Switch to the "postgres" user and create a database by issuing the following commands:
su - postgres
createdb mytestdb
Connect to the test database by issuing the following command:
psql mytestdb
You should see output similar to the following:
psql (8.4.1)
Type "help" for help.

mytestdb=#
This is the PostgreSQL client shell; you may use it to issue SQL statements. To see a list of available commands, use the following command in the shell:
\h
You may find more information on a specific command by adding it after the \h command.

Creating Tables
To create a table in your test database called "employees", issue the following command:
CREATE TABLE employees (employee_id int, first_name varchar, last_name varchar);
To insert a record into the table, you would issue a statement like this:
INSERT INTO employees VALUES (1, 'Jack', 'Sprat');
To see the contents of the "employees" table, you would issue a SELECT statement similar to the following:
SELECT * FROM employees;
This would produce output similar to the following:
mytestdb=# SELECT * FROM employees;
employee_id | first_name | last_name
-------------+------------+-----------
1 | Jack | Sprat

To exit the psql shell, issue this command:

Once you have set up PostgreSQL, you need to set up the administrative password, and create users. This page explains how to do so.



Open the terminal window :


Administration using the database shell: To administer the PostgreSQL database, perform the following tasks:
1. Login as the unix user postgres using the command: "sudo su postgres"
2. Run the command "psql". This command opens a postgresql database shell.
3. Then, execute the SQL commands given below within the psql shell.
4. Type +D to exit the posgreSQL shell.

Administrative tasks

1. Creating a new Database:
A default database called postgres is created when you install PostgreSQL. Create a new database called dbms2010, using the command:
CREATE DATABASE dbms2010;

2. Connect to a database:
Run the below command. Once connected to a database, all schemas and tables are created in that database.
\c dbms2010
3. Creating Schemas and Users:
To create a schema and users in the database 'dbms2010', run the following commands:

\c dbms2010
CREATE USER user1 WITH PASSWORD 'user123'; (You can use any name and password you wish.)
CREATE SCHEMA AUTHORIZATION user1;
(This creates a schema where the tables created by the user1 will be stored; the schema will be named user1).
Perform steps 2 and 3 for each user you need to create in your resource center.


1. Install pgadmin3 GUI client
Run the following command:

sudo apt-get install pgadmin3

Using pgAdmin III
1. Type pgadmin3 in the terminal. You will be presented with the pgAdmin III interface.
2. Click on File > "Add server" to open the "New server registration dialog".
3. Enter the following information and click OK:
1. Name: Can be any name (say 'dbserver')
2. Host: localhost
(if the database is on another computer, use its IP address here)
3. Port: 5432
(this is the default port for PostgreSQL)
4. Username: user1
(or any other user name as appropriate; use "postgres" user only for admin work, do NOT create tables or run queries using the postgres user)
5. Password: user123
(or whatever password you created for this user)

4. Steps 2 and 3 are to be done only on the first use of pgadmin3. Subsequently, the database name (eg. dbserver) can be double-clicked to connect to it.
5. In the 'Object browser', navigate to Servers > dbserver(localhost:5432) > Databases > dbms2010 > Schemas > user1. This is necessary to run the queries in the specific schema.
6. Open the SQL query window by pressing +E or through the "Tools > Query tool" menu item.
7. In the query window, you can type any SQL query and run it using F5 or by clicking the "Execute query" toolbar button. You may have to first clear the contents of the window if there are any.
